The Art of the Text Response
The text response essay is a cornerstone of VCE English. Whether you are studying English, English Language, or Literature, mastering this format can significantly boost your study score.
Understanding the Task
A text response requires you to construct an analytical argument about a set text in response to a specific prompt. You are not summarising the plot, but demonstrating your understanding of the text's themes, characters, and the author's craft.
Structure
Introduction
Your introduction should:
- Address the prompt directly
- State your contention clearly
- Briefly outline the key ideas you will explore
- Reference the text and author
Body Paragraphs (TEEL)
Each body paragraph should follow the TEEL structure:
- Topic sentence: State the paragraph's main idea
- Evidence: Use quotes and specific references from the text
- Explanation: Analyse how the evidence supports your argument
- Link: Connect back to the prompt and your contention
Conclusion
Your conclusion should:
- Restate your contention in different words
- Summarise your key arguments
- End with a thought-provoking final statement
